July 17, 2026 – Kenyan universities are taking significant strides towards aligning engineering education with internationally recognized accreditation standards as the Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC) convenes a training workshop on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) at the Technical University of Mombasa (TUM).

The workshop brings together representatives from universities offering engineering programmes to strengthen their capacity to implement internationally accepted accreditation requirements under the Washington Accord framework. The initiative is part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of engineering education and position Kenyan engineering graduates for greater global recognition and mobility.

Opening the workshop, EBK Ag. Registrar Grace Onyango underscored the importance of accreditation as a continuous quality improvement process rather than a one-time compliance exercise. She noted that robust accreditation systems are essential in producing competent, industry-ready graduates while enhancing the employability and international recognition of engineering qualifications awarded by Kenyan universities.

She further emphasized that quality assurance remains the cornerstone of excellence in engineering education, calling on institutions to strengthen internal systems that support continuous programme review, assessment and improvement.

The training is equipping participants with practical knowledge on the implementation of Outcome-Based Education, an internationally accepted approach that places emphasis on measurable learning outcomes, student-centred teaching methodologies and continuous programme enhancement. Through OBE, engineering programmes are designed to ensure graduates acquire the knowledge, skills and professional competencies required by industry and society.

Participants are also being taken through the revised Engineering Accreditation Standards, with sessions focusing on curriculum alignment, evidence-based assessment, quality assurance mechanisms and compliance with the Washington Accord Graduate Attributes. The workshop aims to support universities in embedding these requirements into their academic programmes as they pursue internationally benchmarked accreditation.
The engagement reinforces Kenya’s commitment to raising the quality and competitiveness of engineering education by ensuring that graduates meet globally accepted professional standards. It also advances the country’s journey towards full implementation of international best practices in engineering education and accreditation.
As the workshop continues, universities are encouraged to strengthen their internal quality assurance systems and fully embrace Outcome-Based Education as a pathway to attaining international accreditation, enhancing graduate competence and increasing the global recognition of Kenyan engineering qualifications.
