The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), in partnership with Strathmore University, convened a two-day workshop and roundtable discussion from 29th to 30th September 2025, focusing on the harmonization of engineering frameworks and mobility of engineers across Africa.
The workshop is a key milestone in Kenya’s ongoing journey toward becoming a full signatory of the Washington Accord under the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) — a recognition that would elevate the global standing of Kenyan engineering qualifications. Speaking during the forum, EBK Registrar/ CEO, Eng. Margaret Ogai, noted the Board’s remarkable progress in strengthening engineering education and accreditation standards. “The Board has recognized 77 out of 78 engineering programs (98%) across 18 local universities, serving over 22,000 enrolled students,” she stated.
As part of the workshop activities, a courtesy visit was made to the Principal Secretary, State Department of Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, to explore collaboration on capacity building for engineering education. The visit included representatives from the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), the Council of Engineering Deans and Principals, and the School of Engineering at Strathmore University.
ECSA pledged its support to EBK’s pursuit of full signatory status to the Washington Accord within the next two years, reaffirming the spirit of regional cooperation in advancing engineering education and practice across Africa.
