EAC Kenya Hosts International Assessors

In an exciting development for Kenya’s engineering education landscape, the Engineers Accreditation Committee (EAC) hosted and welcomed international assessors for an evaluation exercise as a step towards global engineering recognition.

The assessors were from Malaysia and Pakistan for a ten-day evaluation program at local universities which will determine Kenya’s readiness for provisional signatory status. This assessment, began from January 19 to January 26, 2025, aims to align Kenyan engineering programs with international standards and facilitate the country’s recognition under the Washington Accord.

This is a critical step in Kenya’s global recognition journey with external assessment by international nominators from the Board of Engineers Malaysia and the Pakistan Engineering Council with the final decision anticipated at the International Engineering Alliance Meeting in June 2025.

In line with its mandate to ensure the quality and relevance of engineering education in Kenya, the Engineering Accreditation Committee (EAC) conducted a comprehensive review exercise across several universities. The visits targeted engineering programs at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Mount Kenya University (MKU), the Technical University of Kenya (TUK), and Chuka University in Meru.

Among the programs evaluated were the Bachelor of Science in Water and Environmental Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering—which was a resubmission for re-evaluation. Each institution underwent a rigorous assessment process aimed at aligning academic offerings with National and International engineering education standards.

Speaking during the exercise, Engineering Accreditation Committee Chairman, Eng. Prof. Silvester Abuodha, commended the universities for their commitment to maintaining high standards in engineering education.

“We deeply appreciate the universities’ recognition of the committee’s role in ensuring compliance with established standards, which guarantee that all students undergo recognized programs,” he stated.
