In honor of its outgoing Board Members, the Board hosted a farewell dinner to celebrate six years of exceptional service and transformative leadership. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the significant milestones achieved by the Board, which have strengthened Kenya’s engineering sector and enhanced its national and international reputation.
In her remarks, Registrar/CEO, Eng. Margaret Ogai, lauded the outgoing members for their visionary leadership, noting several landmark achievements realized during their tenure. Among them was the impressive growth in the recognition of local engineering programs, which rose from 47% to 96%, positioning Kenya firmly on the path toward global recognition.
Kenya’s accession to the Washington Accord as a provisional signatory marked a major milestone, with three engineering programs already approved by the International Engineering Alliance (IEA) as meeting international standards. Under their stewardship, over 3,000 Graduate Engineers have been trained through the Graduate Engineers Internship Program (GEIP), with an additional 378 engineers supported through the Exchequer. Registration of Professional Engineers doubled from 2,165 to 4,132, while compliance levels improved from 25% to 43%. The number of licensed professionals and firms grew from under 1,000 to over 2,700, reflecting significant growth in the regulated engineering space.
Additional milestones included the approval and dissemination of Career Progression Guidelines by the Public Service Commission (PSC) in February 2025, Kenya’s admission into the World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) and the Federation of African Engineering Organizations (FAEO), and the signing of MoUs with the Korean Professional Engineering Association (KPEA) and the Chinese Society of Engineers (CSE).
Outgoing Chairman, Eng. Erastus Mwongera, commended the EBK Secretariat and fellow Board Members for their dedication, professionalism, and teamwork. “We exit with our heads held high, knowing we have left a legacy of growth. Beyond our tenure, we remain part of the engineering fraternity and will continue to advance the values of this noble profession,” he said.
Representing Principal Secretary, State Department for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, CBS, the Ag. Roads Secretary, Eng. James Kung’u, applauded the outgoing members for their exemplary service and unwavering commitment. He praised EBK for its strong governance and accountability record, noting that the institution has become a benchmark for excellence within the State Department.
Eng. Kung’u further noted that Kenya’s admission as a provisional signatory to the Washington Accord placed the country’s engineering education and training among the best globally, unlocking greater mobility and opportunities for Kenyan engineers. The outgoing Board leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations of engineers to come,” he said, adding that under their leadership, EBK had been rated the top-performing agency within the State Department for Roads.
