26 May EBK, LRF Advance Safer Construction Practices through Capacity Building Initiative

May 25, 2026 – The Engineers Board of Kenya, with support from Lloyd’s Register Foundation, continues to champion efforts aimed at strengthening safety culture within Kenya’s construction industry through a transformative capacity-building programme targeting engineering professionals, students, and construction workers.
The initiative seeks to enhance safety awareness, compliance, and professional competence across the construction sector by equipping stakeholders with practical occupational safety knowledge and skills. The programme supports curriculum development for engineering students, industry-focused short courses, construction site monitoring tools, and policy reforms intended to reduce workplace accidents and improve safety standards.
From 18th–22nd May 2026, EBK convened a finalization workshop in Naivasha bringing together stakeholders from academia, industry, and regulatory institutions, with support from the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health Services (DOSH), to streamline and finalize 11 identified industry short courses and advance the development of safety policy frameworks for Kenya’s construction sector.
The workshop provided a platform for collaborative review and alignment of training content to industry needs, while also strengthening partnerships among institutions involved in occupational safety, engineering education, and construction regulation.
Since the launch of the programme, several milestones have been achieved, including nationwide stakeholder surveys, establishment of technical working groups, strategic engagements with industry regulators, development of engineering safety curricula, and the design of monitoring tools aimed at improving safety compliance on construction sites.
The initiative reflects EBK’s continued commitment to promoting professionalism, safeguarding public welfare, and supporting safer infrastructure development through collaboration, innovation, and capacity building across Kenya’s engineering value chain.
