Engineers Board of Kenya

It gives me great pleasure and honor to welcome you all to todays engineering day celebrations. As we may be aware, in the month of November, 2019, the 40th General Conference of UNESCO adopted a resolution to proclaim 4th March of every year a world engineering day for sustainable development.

This is an opportunity to celebrate the important contributions of engineers and engineering to sustainable Development and modern life. It is also an opportunity to discuss how engineers can be involved in sustainable development and also to engage the wider community on the contributions of engineers and engineering.

Engineers and engineering are very critical for achieving Sustainable Development goals, it is engineers who develop and implement technologies and systems, they develop infrastructure that withstand weather related events, they develop essential infrastructures such as roads, bridges, dams, they come up with innovations that benefit the people and enable them lead a better life among other activities. It is against this background that the Board has been in the forefront in ensuring that our engineers receive the best and they are adequately trained to be able to offer the best services in the industry.

As you will readily note, the engineering profession is at the core of delivering the necessary environment for economic prosperity. Indeed, the profession is a most pivotal enabler of the attainment of the Big Four Agenda and its services cuts across all the four pillars.

The Board commits to work closely with the government to ensure that the Big Four agenda is fully achieved by providing a quality assurance mechanism for engineers involved in the projects and programs within the affordable housing program, engineers in the manufacturing sector and agricultural sector and those supporting the delivery of Universal Health Care through setting up of necessary infrastructure and equipment for health facilities.

Ladies and gentlemen

As you may be aware, the Engineers Act 2011 repealed and replaced the Engineers Registration Act (1969) in order to provide a stronger and effective legal framework to attend to the challenges of the day and promote the practice of engineering.

The Board is therefore committed to the implementation of the Act to ensure that the desired outcomes and benefits from the implementation of the Act are fully realized. To effectively do this, the Board will work with all its stakeholders at both the National Government level and the County Governments as well.

The Board has several programs that seek to promote the practice of engineering for the achievement of our Countrys Vision 2030 and to promote sustainable development goals to transform our Nation by facilitating and nurturing the growth of knowledge for engineers.

The Board is committed to ensuring that engineers remain professional by maintaining their knowledge, upholding professional code of ethics and being true to their professional calling.

Chief Guest

The Board has been at the forefront in development of programs and strengthening the engineering practice including initiating programs such as graduate engineers internship programs, continuing professional programs and accreditation of engineering programs in the Universities. The Board will continue reviewing all these programs to ensure that they serve the intended purpose.

In order to facilitate effective delivery of engineering services, the Board has put in place mechanisms to ensure that the registration process is faster and efficient. The Board is automating all its processes and all the registration processes will now be undertaken online. It is hoped that effective processes will lead to an increase of the number of Professional and Consulting engineers registered annually.

Finally,

The Board is well seized of the challenges facing the nation in relation to the practice of engineering and will continually seek to engage all stakeholders in formulating strategies and solutions to address these challenges.

In particular, the Board is keen to ensure that professionals undertake their responsibilities fully and are held accountable for their actions. Similarly, the Board will ensure that engineers are given their space to practice effectively for the safety and health of the public.
